Prysmian, NKT and Siemens to supply cables and converters for Viking Link

Energinet and British National Grid have chosen Prysmian and NKT as suppliers of the 1400 MW DC cable that will connect the Danish and British transmission networks. To deliver the converter stations the two partners have chosen Siemens. In total, the contracts represent a value of approx. 1,1 billion EURO.

Viking Link consists of two parallel 768 km long HVDC cables. Prysmian will deliver the onshore cable in UK and the offshore cable while NKT will deliver the land cable in Denmark.
Siemens supplies and installs the two converter stations that convert the direct current to alternating current and vice versa.

With the conclusion of contracts, the project now takes the step from the planning phase to the construction phase. The construction of the converter stations will begin in 2020, while land cables and submarine cables will be installed between 2020 and 2023. At the end of 2023 the interconnector will be put into operation.

It is expected that the contracts will be signed late August.
