Robust gas supply situation during the redevelopment of the Tyra platform

Today, Total E&P Danmark has announced that the date for restart of production from the Tyra Redevelopment Project is updated from 1 July 2022 to 1 June 2023. Still, Energinet Gas TSO considers the gas supply situation to Denmark robust.

”Now, well into the second year of the redevelopment period of the Tyra platform, we can conclude that the supply situation in Denmark is stable. The Danish gas storage facilities are filled and ready to supply the market during the coming Winther.  Market participants have already now booked storage and transmission capacity to supply both Denmark and Sweden until 2022. Based on the positive experience up till now, we are convinced that the market will also react appropriately and book sufficient storage and transmission capacity to be able to supply Denmark and Sweden for the remaining period in 2023 where the production from the Tyra platform is now expected to restart.  Also, from October 2022 the Baltic Pipe project will provide Denmark with a large new supply of gas from Norway, which will improve the security of supply in Denmark during the redevelopment of the Tyra platform.  Finally, the increasing production of biogas fed into the gas system, will be able to supply approximately 22% of the gas consumption with Danish green gas already from end this year, and the production of biogas will also increase in the years to come,” says Jeppe Danø, Gas Market Director, Energinet Gas TSO.

Recently, Energinet published an evaluation of the supply situation in Denmark during the redevelopment of the Tyra platform. The conclusions of a stabile supply situation in this evaluation can be carried forward to 2023. Denmark will be supplied from Germany, from the Danish gas storage facilities, from minor gas fields in the North Sea, and from Danish biogas.
Germany is a central focal point for the supply to the European gas markets and also to Denmark/Sweden. The Danish gas storage facilities are filled and have sufficient capacity to supply Denmark and Sweden during the Winther periods. The production of biogas is increasing rapidly and now play an important role for the security of supply in Denmark. Energinet has intensified the work to maintain the security of supply and prevent supply failure on the gas market already from 2017, where it became clear that the Tyra platform was about to undergo a reconstruction. The preventing measures will now be extended until 2023.
