Nordic TSO strategy work focussing next on wind power and sector integration

The four Nordic transmission system operators have launched work on an updated common strategy to meet the development in wind power and sector integration. The time span for the strategy work covers the next ten years up till 2030.

The energy transition is changing the electricity landscape. The transmission system operators welcome this development and are positive to act as an enabler for the transition to a cleaner energy system. Electricity and the increase in its use have been addressed by the European Commission as one of the keys to meet the climate targets of the European Union. We need more clean electricity, which wind power both onshore and offshore can generate. Each Nordic TSO faces the challenges of energy transition. The four TSOs see a need for a common approach for an efficient integration of wind and to support and utilize the integration of energy systems. These are among the means to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The work will utilise the special knowledge of each Nordic TSO. Energinet has been working with both offshore and onshore wind development and Power-to-X, Statnett has gained the experience of handling flexibility in the distribution grids, Svenska kraftnät has accommodated vast amounts of onshore wind and Fingrid is integrating more and more wind but also following power to heat projects taking place in Finland.

Both wind development and sector integration are areas where the future development and their paths are dependent on multiple actors. The stakeholders are key for this strategy work and their inputs and their views will be important in the process. Therefore, stakeholders will be invited to participate to webinars and consultations. The first webinar is foreseen in early spring 2021. The work will be finalized and made public in spring 2022 as part of the next Nordic TSOs joint Solutions Report.
