Summary

The annual report presents the results of our business activities and our financial statements for 2016. The annual report shows the importance of cooperation to ensure better energy integration. 2016 was characterised by cooperation on new international connections and on providing a framework for a more sustainable and flexible energy consumption.

The management’s review contains, among other things, four focus articles on the es-tablishment of a Nordic RSC, green gas in the transmission grid, the work on the large electricity and gas interconnections with neighbouring countries and the introduction of the wholesale model.

Integration and cooperation are, in fact, keywords to successfully overcoming the common challenge facing us in Denmark and everybody in Europe and which is of such decisive importance to our society – ensuring a secure supply of sustainable energy for citizens and enterprises. Now and in future.

Winter Package: Free movement of energy across boarders

Several of the largest projects undertaken by Energinet in the past year follow the paths set out in the European Commission’s so-called Winter Package from November 2016: the free movement of energy across borders as well as the development of energy markets that create balance between consumption and production. We are very proud of this.

We are proud of the wholesale model, and it is a pride we share with the hundreds of professionals from the grid companies and electricity suppliers who were involved in the launch of the model in April. We are proud of the Nordic RSC (Regional Security Coordinator) in Copenhagen, and it is a pride we share with our Nordic TSO colleagues in Finland, Sweden and Norway, with whom we entered into a cooperation agreement in 2016. We are proud of the new important interconnections which came closer to completion in the course of the year, and it is a pride we share with our partners in the UK, the Netherlands, Poland and Germany.

Organisational changes

2016 was also a year of organisational changes. Energinet took over DONG Energy’s gas distribution grid following the IPO of DONG Energy. The rationale behind the takeover is that critical infrastructure must remain in public hands. In 2016, it was also decided that our administration of statutory subsidies for environmentally friendly energy production will move to Esbjerg, and is expected to be part of the Danish Energy Agency from Janu-ary 2018.
