Long-term development plan for the gas system 2022

The green transition requires development - and ultimately even rethinking the gas system as we know it today. By 2040 the Danish gas consumption must be 100 pct green according to our targets. At the same time, the increasing quantities of biogas and gas from Norway via Denmark to Poland will be transported through the gas system for many years to come. How do we ensure that our future gas system is geared to the green transition – and at the same time allow for the industry sector’s continued and new interest in using gas?

On this page, you can gain insight into the future development needs of the gas system and possible solutions as we head towards a more climate-friendly society by 2040. You can download the reports at the bottom of this page.

Why is Energinet working with long-term development plans for the gas and electricity systems?

Big changes are taking place in our energy landscape, which will look very different in the coming decades driven by the green transition and the Danish climate target to reduce CO2 emissions by 70 per cent by 2030. This requires full speed on the green transition of our energy systems. Changes, reinforcements, and expansions of both our gas and electricity systems are needed if our Danish energy system is to support the development all the way to our green target.

At the same time, we at Energinet must stay focused on our core task: To always ensure safe operation and security of supply in the existing energy systems. Also, we must get input and host a close dialogue across society and stakeholders.

Therefore, we work with long-term development plans for both the gas and electricity systems, both based on the Danish Energy Agency's Analysis Assumptions for Energinet from 2020 (AF20). The Analysis Assumptions provide a likely scenario for developments in the consumption and production of gas and electricity, which are aligned with the political objectives.

The long-term development plans are split into targeted reports, each with its aim. The reports just released below identify future needs of the gas and electricity systems and possible solutions. They will form the basis of the dialogue with society and our stakeholders. Based on the input from this process the final long-term development plan (LUP) will be published in 2022.
