Information about the construction work on western Funen and the implications on the Danish gas transmission system

The Danish Road Directorate is constructing a new railway across western Funen. In order to accommodate the new railway, Energinet needs to relocate the existing gas pipeline along the route. The new pipeline must be put into operation before the old pipeline can be removed and The Danish Road Directorate can begin constructing the new railway.

The construction work of the new pipeline is well underway, and the next step in the project is to perform the tie-in of the new section.  The tie-in period is planned from week 45 to 50.

During this period, the capacity towards eastern Denmark can only be maintained by the capacity in the pipeline section across Funen that were built with the Baltic Pipe project. The Capacity in the Baltic Pipe pipeline is approximately 14 GWh/h. This capacity must cover the demand in eastern Denmark, Sweden, injection capacity to the Stenlille gas storage facility and exit capacity towards Poland.

The table below show how the capacity is expected to be used given the temperature (based on historical consumption data).

Expected capacities and use of system given the temperature (GWh/h)

This means that if it is -5 degrees Celsuis and flow towards Poland is 10.6 GWh/h the system will need physical withdrawal from Stenlille of 1.2 GWh/h to maintain the necessary capacities.

When temperatures are higher or if flow towards Poland is lower it is possible to inject higher volumes into Stenlille. Furthermore, in this scenario the need for withdrawal from Stenlille is reduced.

During the tie-in construction the system operation will continue as normal. However, the pressure in the eastern parts of the systems is much lower than normal. The flexibility of the system is therefore reduced and the green zone in the balancing model needs to be reduced to +/- 5 GWh

* Please be aware that Gas Storage Denmark has two gas storage facilities (Ll. Torup and Stenlille) and that there is one virtual storage point for nomination. The injection capacities available is as communicated in the UMM approx. 3.3 GWh/h
