Core component ordered for new German-Danish interconnector

​50Hertz and establish a 400 MW offshore interconnection using offshore wind-park connections

By awarding the contract for a HVDC (high-voltage direct current) converter station in Bentwisch, Northern Germany, the transmission system operators 50Hertz and make an important step towards establishing an interconnection between the national grids of Germany and Denmark.

The “Kriegers Flak Combined Grid Solution” will be the world’s first offshore interconnection that is using the national grid connections to offshore wind-farms. The future offshore wind-park Kriegers Flak (Denmark) and the operating offshore wind-park Baltic 2 (Germany) are located less than 30 kilometers apart from each other. Using the windpark-connections, the interconnector can be established by linking the windparks with two relatively short submarine cables.

The contract for the HVDC converter is worth 140 million Euros and was awarded to Power and Automation technology group ABB. The converter is necessary to connect eastern Denmark and Germany, as the two regions belong to different synchronous areas. The back-to-back solution will use two voltage source converters (VSC) to change the alternating current (AC) from the Nordic synchronous area into direct current (DC) and directly back to AC, now adapted to the European synchronous area.

The new AC interconnection will have a capacity of around 400 megawatts (MW). Operation is to start by the end of 2018. The connection contributes to the European target to establish a common energy market. By that, it enhances the integration of renewable energy into the grid and increases the security of supply in both countries.

The project is co-financed by the European Union and will receive funding from the European Energy Programme for Recovery (EEPR). Additionally, the “Kriegers Flak – Combined Grid Solution” holds the status of a “project of common interest” (PCI), given by the European Commission. Projects of this status are grid expansion projects of significant importance, as they will bridge gaps in the infrastructure of the European power system.
